Smart Storage

A storage unit was to be designed with a smart interactive system. I incorporated my storage design in a makeup display unit for Maybelline New York's Fit Me! collection including their foundations and concealers. This design makes the shopping process easier for customers, ensuring they receive new, sealed products and for employees - making the daily tasks, such as restocking, less time consuming and more efficient.

The Challenge

Small makeup products are vulnerable to theft due to their easy-to-open nature.

Makeup display shelves & storage, are too low, resulting in back/neck pain. Some do not even have the storage facility.

The storage in makeup display units is very inefficient & unorganized. Time consuming for the employee to scavenge only to find the product has gone out of stock.

New makeup users face difficulties in differentiating and understanding the usage of certain products due to a lack of clear categorization and information.

Target Audience

For all customers and employees (regardless of age, gender, sex etc.)

The Solution

A free-standing unit, accessible from all sides and stands out to increase brand awareness.

Where will this be displayed?

Since this is an isle display unit, it can be placed anywhere as it is accessible from any direction and acts as a break-through in the traffic. The main purpose of it is to showcase Maybelline's collection.

What products will be stored/displayed?

Maybelline's Fit Me! collection will be stored/displayed. This consists of two products: foundations and concealers.

Interview Findings

  • "Some makeup items are placed really low on the shelves, I have to kneel down to take a look. Not the best posture." -Customer

  • "There have been many instances where I want to buy a foundation and its already opened. I don't want to buy used products obviously." -Customer

  • "The store I work in has a couple of small hidden drawers in the shelves. They're pretty much useless because not much can be stored in them and anyone can open it." - Employee

Primary Personas

The design approach consisted of two interconnected parts, catering to the specific needs of each persona. For employees, the emphasis was on efficient storage management, while customers were provided with an engaging and user-friendly display. The overarching goal was to create a seamless and satisfying interaction for both personas. This dual-focused design strategy, supported by iterative feedback loops, aimed to deliver a cohesive and user-friendly solution that addressed the distinct roles and responsibilities of both customers and employees.

Ideation and Development

Ideation and Development

Initially, ideated various concepts of elevated storage units. The storage located at the back is accessed via an employee card to ensure security. Furthermore, I designed separate shelves for the two different products to easily differentiate them.

Final Design

Scenario (Employee Perspective)

An employee can access the back storage via their employee card.

The employee is informed which products are running low in stock, instead of having to search themselves.
